Formerly known as “British Honduras,” Belize lies on the beautiful
Caribbean Ocean just south of Mexico. Gaining independence in 1981, after nearly
180 years of British rule, Belize is part of the British Commonwealth, much
like that of Canada. Therefore, it has its own freely elected, stable democratic
government. The most common language is English, however you will also hear
Creole and Spanish. There are many different cultures that comprise Belize,
including Creole, Garufina, Maya, Mestizo, Mennonites, Chinese, East Indian,
English, Lebanese and Mennonites. With over 170 miles of coastline, this country
offers travelers incredible diversity, from its pristine marine environment,
historical Mayan Ruins, and lush tropical rainforests. All awaiting you to
enjoy and explore.
